MAGGIE
******* Experienced foster home applications would be appreciated in the Mobile, Alabama area!******** Maggie wandered onto the land behind a church about a year and a half ago and endeared the church members who provided her with food, water and a doghouse. Assuming she had been spayed because she never had a litter during this time, she likely did not because of her stressful situation. As she became more comfortable, allowing a select few people to approach her, she eventually did draw the attention of a male suitor (Motley, also listed with BBR) and now has a litter of 12 to raise. She and Motley and the babies have been placed in a temporary foster home. Maggie is a Mastiff/Shepherd mix with a lovely grey brindle coat. She weighs in at 130 lbs and is a gentle soul. She has been a fabulous mom and is extremely tolerant of people handling her babies. She will shake with her paw and generally enjoys being in the company of humans, especially now that she is in a much better, caring environment rather than roaming loose. Maggie is up to date on her vaccines and is heartworm negative and on preventative. She will be spayed once the puppies are weaned and before going to a new home. She barks to alert, typical Mastiff trait and is basically a loving, sweet dog who deserves a better life than what she's had. She walks well on a leash, content to hang out with the people she knows and she should bond easily and quickly to a new family. She has been great with the children she has met, we are not sure about cats but during her days behind the church, she was often seen deferring to the stray cats when they came around. She should do well with a dog savvy cat. She is very bonded to Motley and we would love to adopt them together. Because she has been on the streets for most of her young life, she needs an owner who will be patient, positive and help her to build her confidence. This smart girl should prove to be a fabulous pet. UPDATE JULY 8, 2008: Maggie has flourished since her puppies have been transported to their new homes, we think that she is very much relieved! She did a fabulous job raising 12 big babies and we are so proud of her! Once the puppies were adopted, Maggie immediately began gaining weight and becoming more and more playful. She's so happy to see visitors and is still as sweet as ever. We would love nothing more than to see Maggie find a great home of her own with someone who is willing to continue working with her on socialization.
