Figaro had a young teenage owner and
somehow escaped and was found running in the streets. He had been recently
attacked by another dog and was covered in fresh bite wounds, mostly
superficial. We suspect the boy had been unsuccessfully trying to get him to
fight another dog.
Since being in his foster home, he has really come out of his shell, maybe a bit
too much! Figaro is living in a foster home with quite a number of other dogs
and really needs more attention than he is getting. As a result, when he’s
indoors, he’s so excited to see everybody that he can be a little wild, throwing
toys and racing around. Once he gets it out of his system, he does quiet down
and likes to lie on the couch to watch TV or sleep. Fig will need some
training and a loving, patient owner who can work on his self confidence and
manners.
He appears to be a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and is a pretty black bully with
white on his chest. He's about 2 years old and weighs 38 pounds. He has been
neutered, is up to date on vaccinations and is heartworm negative and on
preventative.
He is crate trained and is quiet at night but will "scream" if he sees someone
or another dog and cannot get out to be with them. He is very social, and would
do best in an environment where he gets to spend lots of time with his people.
He plays with the resident young male pit bull nicely. He's too high energy for
young children but likes kids. He would do better in a home with older children
who wouldn't be knocked down by his exuberance.
Because he likely hasn't had a lot of experience with living inside a home,
he'll need some work on his manners inside. But he should learn quickly what is
acceptable, as his greatest desire is to please people. He would do best with an
active owner, someone who can offer him plenty of exercise to tone down his
energy. He would probably do great with an active, female dog for a playmate.
***UPDATE 1/5/09***
Figaro's foster has really been working with him on his house manners and he is
responding well. From his foster:
When it's his turn to
have free run of the house, he's initially a little rambunctious, racing around
and jumping on the couch. Once he gets that out of his system, his manners are
good. He usually curls up on the couch with a Nylabone. Since the day he was
neutered, he has not tried to mark territory and has had no accidents. He hasn't
tried to chew anything other than Nylabones. He's not often left unattended, but
a few times I've left him alone in the den for an hour or so. When I returned,
he was asleep on the couch.
Figaro would respond wonderfully in a positive training class and will make a
great pet for someone.
***UPDATE

Figaro was recently allowed to be near some cats and from our observations, we
feel that Figaro should do okay in a home with cats who are dog-savvy. Figaro
expressed interest in the cats, but quickly moved his interest on to other
things, so this tells us that he most likely won't have a problem with cats in
the home.
Since we believe that Figaro
is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, here are some links with a great description of
the breed and some pictures.
